Overdraft Privilege

Having a check returned due to insufficient funds can be embarrassing and costly and we offer options to avoid that situation. Bank of the West offers Overdraft Privilege for customers with proven positive account history up to $1,500.00 on personal accounts.

How does Overdraft Privilege work?

Overdraft Privilege will automatically be added to accounts in good standing 30 days after account opening. It will be activated upon presentation of a transaction that is in excess to your current balance, but not to exceed the allowed overdraft limit. Payment of overdrafts caused by ATM and normal debit card transactions such as point-of-sale (POS) transactions will only be authorized if you have opted-in to that service.

What is an account in good standing?

To be eligible for this Overdraft Privilege after thirty (30) days of the account opening date, the account must be in good standing which includes the following:

  • At a minimum, two deposits (or 1 direct deposit) credited to the account
  • Maintain a positive balance
  • No returned items due to an insufficient balance
  • You or your account are not the subject of any legal or administrative order or levy
  • You are not involved in an active bankruptcy proceeding
  • There is no apparent illegal or abusive activity on the account
  • You have no delinquent loan(s) with us
  • You currently have no other deposit accounts with us that have Overdraft Privilege

What is your Overdraft Privilege limit?

The Overdraft Privilege limit on personal accounts is $1,500 and is available to accounts in good standing.

What is the cost of Overdraft Privilege?

There is no cost for Overdraft Privilege unless you use it. If your balance isn’t sufficient to cover a presented debit then you will be charged an overdraft fee of $35.00 for each item paid into the overdraft, within the Overdraft Privilege limit. Keep in mind that this fee applies to overdrafts created by check, in-person withdrawal, ATM withdrawal, debit card purchases, or other electronic means.

What are the terms of Overdraft Privilege?

You are expected to repay the overdraft amount, plus any fees. You must bring your account completely current and to a positive balance within 30 days of the date first overdrawn for this instance. If the account is not handled satisfactorily then the Overdraft Privilege feature will be removed from the account. If the account is not paid in full after 45 days then the account will be considered a collection account and appropriate action will be taken.
